History of Than Phong Taekwondo and Taekwondo

Studio Profile: Victor Phan - founder of The Planet MA Federation
NOTE: Read the Vietnamese version.Grand Master Victor Duc Phan was born on April 20, 1944 in Cho Lon, Viet Nam. He passed away at 7:58 pm on April 30, 2009 in San Jose, CA at the age of 66.
He was a 9th degree black belt, was the second asian TKD tournament black belt overall champion and a much loved grandmaster at The Planet. This is his biography.
Grand Master Phan was the President of Than Phong The Planet Martial Arts Federation, as well as, the Director of Than Phong’s Headquarter in San Jose.Grand Master Phan was born in a traditional martial-arts family, where he started learning and practicing martial arts at a young age. In the early 1960’s when Taekwondo was first introduced to Viet Nam, Grand Master Phan studied Taekwondo under the late founder, General Choi Hong Hi and Grand Master Kim Byung-Woon, who is currently President of the KUKKIWON’s Technical Committee, World Taekwondo Federation.Grand Master Phan joined the Vietnamese Armed forces in 1965, where he served in the Air Force division. He first served in the Supply and Maintenance Unit and later transferred to the Political Warfare Unit, Martial Arts division. He was the cofounder of Than Phong Martial Arts Federation, which was founded on December 20, 1966 at Tan Son Nhat Air Forced Base in Viet Nam.In 1975, after South Viet Nam fell into Communist hands, Grand Master Phan was sent to the so-call “re-education” camps from 1975 until 1984. Due to his passion for the Martial Arts, Grand Master Phan, after being released from the “re-education” camp, immediately started teaching Martial Arts to a small group of Than Phong Instructors and students, even with the Communist Government prohibition of Martial Arts still in affect.Grand Master Phan came to US in 1989, where he first resided in Rhode Island for short period of time. Later, when he settled in San Jose, he started teaching Taekwondo again. One of his former student from Than Phong in Viet Nam transferred his Dojang and 60 students to Grand Master Phan. Due to the large number of new students, he moved the DoJang to a bigger place at Umbarger Road and kept the Dojang running until today. With the encouragement and support from everyone, Grand Master Phan traveled around the world to countries such as France, Canada, Australia, and so on, to conduct Belt Promotion Tests as well as held seminars at local DoJang every year.In 2005, Grand Master Phan attained the rank of 9th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, and he also achieved the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt in Gumdo in the same year.In the many years of being president of the Than Phong The Planet Martial Arts Federation, Grand Master Phan has trained many students and instructors who won a lot of Championship in Taekwondo Tournaments, and had achieved many honors and recognitions for the Federation. Grand Master Phan dreamed about publishing a magazine on Oriental Medicine, Martial Arts Philosophy, and Heath. He believed that, with more than 60 years of Martial Arts experience, he can write a book that may help and benefit a lot of people. But he was not able to fulfill this dream before passed on. Grand Master Phan’s sudden death has shocked us, and the thousands of students in the Federation, as well as friends from all over the world. April 30, 2009, marks the saddest day in the hearts of everyone that knew him.Under Grand Master Phan’s leadership, Than Phong made the following achievements:* 1969 Viet Nam Armed Force Taekwondo Championship: Black Belt Team Grand Champion.* 1970 Viet Nam National TaekwondO Championship: Black Belt Grand Champions (Team and Individual)* 1972 Viet Nam National TaekwondO Championship: Black Belt Grand Champion* 1973 Viet Nam Armed Force TaekwondO Championship: Black Belt Grand Champions (Team and Individual)* 1974 Viet Nam National TaekwondO Championship: Team Grand Champion and also Team Runner-up* March 1971 at the 2nd Asia Sea Game in Malaysia,GrandMaster Victor Duc Phan won Gold Medal in Black Belt Individual,Gold Medal in Black Belt Team (with Mr. Kim Phuc Nam, Huynh Van Phuc, Le VanChau), and Bronze Medal in Individual Breaking Competition

Than-Phong in Viet Nameses means “unstoppable storm”. The Than-Phong Martial-Arts Federation has relocated and is headquartered in San Jose, California, but the organization is also located in: France, Canada, Australia, and other parts of the United States (Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, Maryland and Florida). The founder, Victor Phan, lives in San Jose, California, but frequently travels to attend tournaments and conferences around the world.
Information to ThanPhong TKD: A healthy body produces a healthy mind. Our goal is to teach young people the martial arts philosophy and ability to defend themselves effectively when attacked. People also learn to maintain good health to fight again disease and remain active during later years. We build self confidence and flexability through martial arts thereby setting a good a sample for all people.

History of Taekwondo The earliest records of Martial Arts practice in Korea date back to about 50 B.C. These earliest forms of korean martial arts are known as 'Taek Kyon'. Evidence that Martial Arts were being practiced at that time can be found in tombs where wall-paintings show two men in fighting-stance. Others reject this evidence and say that these men could be simply dancing. Back then, time there were three kingdoms:
Koguryo (37 B.C. - 668 A.D.)
Paekje (18 B.C. - 600 A.D.)
Silla (57 B.C. - 935 A.D.)

Silla unified the kingdoms after winning the war against Paekje in 660 A.D. and Koguryo in 668 A.D. The Hwa Rang Do played an important role at this unification. The Hwa Rang Do was an elite group of young noble men, devoted to cultivating mind and body and serve the kingdom Silla. The best translation for HwaRang would probably be "flowering youth" (Hwa ="flower", Rang="young man"). The HwaRang Do had an honor-code and practiced various forms of martial arts, including Taekyon and Soo Bakh Do. The old honor-code of the HwaRang is the philosophical background of modern Taekwondo. What followed was a time of peace and the HwaRang turned from a military organization to a group specialized in poetry and music. It was in 936 A.D. when Wang Kon founded the Koryo dynasty, an abbreviation of Koguryo. The name Korea is derived from Koryo. During the Koryo Dynasty the sport Soo Bakh Do, which was then used as a military training method, became popular. During the Joseon-dynasty (also known as the Yi-dynasty. 1392 A.D. - 1910 A.D.) this emphasis on military training disappeared. King Taejo, founder of the Joseon-dynasty, replaced Buddhism by Confucianism as the state religion. According to Confucianism, the higher class should study the poets, read poems and and play music. Martial arts was something for the common, or even inferior, man. Modern-day Taekwondo is influenced by many other Martial Arts. The most important of these arts is Japanese Karate. This is because Japan dominated Korea during 1910 until the end of World War II. During WWII, lots of Korean soldiers were trained in Japan. During this occupation of Korea, the Japanese tried to erase all traces of the Korean culture, including the martial arts. The influence that Japan has given to Taekwondo are the quick, lineair movements, that characterize the various Japanese systems. After World War II, when Korea became independant, several kwans arose. These kwans were:
Chung Do Kwan
Moo Duk Kwan
Yun Moo Kwan
Chang Moo Kwan
Oh Do Kwan
Ji Do Kwan
Chi Do Kwan
Song Moo Kwan

The Kwans united in 1955 as Tae Soo Do. In the beginning of 1957, the name Taekwondo was adopted by several Korean martial arts masters, for its similarity to the name Tae Kyon. General Choi Hong-hi required the army to train Taekwondo, so the very first Taekwondo students were Korean soldiers. The police and air force had to learn Taekwondo as well. At that time, Taekwondo was merely a Korean version of Shotokan Karate. In 1961 the Korean Taekwondo Union arose from the Soo Bakh Do Association and the Tae Soo Do Association. In 1962 the Korean Amateur Sports Association acknowledged the Korean Taekwondo Union and in 1965 the name was changed to Korean Taekwondo Association (K.T.A.). General Choi was president of the K.T.A. at that time and was asked to start the I.T.F. as the international branch of the K.T.A. The southern government was overthrown in 1961. General Choi Hong-hi left for America and established I.T.F. (International Taekwondo Federation) Taekwondo, as a separate entity, two years later.
